Story by one GSSF competitor
My husband first discovered something called “GSSF”. We drove three hours away to check it out, ask questions, and just see if it was something we’d be interested in. We were so impressed by how welcoming, helpful, and interesting the GSSF match looked that we were very interested. At the time, we didn’t even own a Glock… While we were there, we asked which Glock would be recommended that both of us could use and share. The Glock 19 was highly recommended. So, we bought several of the Glock 19 magazines, to the surprise of the GSSF staff member because he knew we didn’t even own a Glock. ;) Paid for our memberships and when we received our membership cards, along with our Glock discount card, we headed to a blue label dealer to purchase our Glock 19.
First few matches…
Again, everyone was extremely helpful and understanding when we told them this was our first time or that we were beginners. I remember stepping up to shoot, my heart pounding as I waited for the timer to go off so I could start shooting… Couple of things I share with first timers, especially if they say they are nervous.
Since I started in 2019, I have seen improvement in my scores and my gun handling skills. My scores were not competitive but, with GSSF every entry is entered into random drawings for Glocks and other prizes. I remember one of our new and now forever friends, saying that when he started, he set a goal of reaching 100. I quickly thought that at my age, I probably would not be able to accomplish that. I said I would be delighted to reach 100 but, was not optimistic… With practice and learning, my skills did improve.
Eventually, I had an Amateur win in the Glock Girls division and won a Glock. Now, I know that with practice and learning, I have the opportunity to improve my skills.
Life is an adventure. GSSF is just one of my trails. Good luck and jump in. We have made so many friends and always meeting new ones.
My story applies to guys and gals, except the guys can’t enter the Glock Girls Division.

- Remember, it’s just a “game”
- Take a couple of deep, calming breaths to try to relax.
- Consider the match as just another practice day.
- Think the timer is only telling you it is time to start. Don’t try to rush your shots. Best to be accurate over reckless speed. If you pick up a lot of extra points, it doesn’t matter how fast you shot, your score will be higher than if you focused on accuracy and a reasonable pace.
- Life is an adventure – jump in and give it a try. I’ve never talked to a first timer after they shot the match that was sorry they tried it. Others say, I wish I had tried it sooner.
